This unique engine combines a twin-scroll TwinPower Turbo, High Precision direct fuel injection, and BMW’s Valvetronic variable intake technology that helps the engine "breathe" better. Auto Start-Stop
Red lights, traffic jams, train crossings—in everyday driving situations there are countless instances where the engine is idling, unnecessarily burning fuel. Auto Start-Stop automatically switches off the engine when the vehicle is stationary and the driver engages the brake. This only happens when energy is not needed for anything else — such as for the air-conditioning system and rear window defroster — and as soon as the driver’s foot leaves the brake pedal, the engine starts up again. It's a seamless and comfortable way to save fuel and protect the environment.

Brake Energy Regeneration
To supply a battery with electrical energy, the generator (alternator) is usually driven using engine power, which requires fuel. With Brake Energy Regeneration, the generator produces electricity when the driver brakes or takes a foot off the accelerator. Kinetic energy that was previously unharnessed is transformed into electrical energy, then fed into the battery. In this way, electricity is generated without consuming fuel.

Active Blind Spot Detection
Looking forward isn't just a metaphor for our insatiable desire to innovate. It's also quite literal. The available Active Blind Spot Detection system helps eliminate blind spots and actually allows drivers to avoid collisions when changing lanes, literally keeping your gaze straight ahead. Using radar sensors at the rear of the vehicle to monitor the traffic behind it, this system alerts drivers if a vehicle is in their blind spot by displaying a light on their side-view mirror housings. And on the chance the driver does not notice the warning and signals to indicate changing lanes, the light on the mirror housing begins to flash and the steering wheel vibrates.
Adaptive LED Headlights
LED technology is used exclusively for both high and low beams, as well as in all four Corona headlight rings. At speeds of up to 35 mph, LED cornering lights automatically light up the side of the road when turning. At faster speeds, the Adaptive Headlights feature automatically swivels the headlights to illuminate the road around bends, based on your steering wheel movements. LED lights also include the High Beam Assistant feature, which uses a sensor to automatically switch the high-beam headlights on and off depending on the traffic situation.
Full Color Head-Up Display
The BMW Full Color Head-Up Display projects key information onto the windshield that appears directly in the driver’s field of vision, minimizing distractions. Responsive to light conditions around them, the projections can be easily adjusted using the iDrive controller. Depending on the vehicle specification, the display not only shows current speed, but speed limits, navigation instructions, entertainment information, and various warning messages.
