Driving Modes
Giving the driver greater control over their drive, the BMW i8 features a Driving Experience Control switch on the center console that offers various driving modes. Choosing to drive on electric power alone takes the BMW i8 up to 15* miles, while the combined range in hybrid mode is up to 330* miles in everyday conditions.
Turbocharged Performance
With a look that broadcasts its performance capabilities, it performs just as you'd expect. The BMW i8 features a powerful TwinPower Turbo 3-cylinder combustion engine placed in the rear axle which is controlled by a six-speed automatic transmission. As the first BMW production model to be fitted with this type of engine, it boasts 228 hp and up to 236 lb-ft of torque, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds, making it as exciting as it is innovative.
eDrive
The BMW i8 has an electric motor placed near the front axle capable of 129 hp, which is supplemented by 184 lb-ft of torque from an integrated two-stage automatic transmission. Taking its energy from the high-performance lithium-ion battery, it provides an additional power eBoost to assist the gasoline engine during acceleration. Paired with the TwinPower Turbo 3-cylinder engine in the rear, the all-wheel drive BMW i8 provides a combined maximum power of 357 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. This seamless interaction between electric motor and combustion engine comes from specially designed intelligent energy management. The result is a powerful and efficient plug-in hybrid.
Aerodynamic Streamflow Exterior
The BMW i8 is designed to maximize aerodynamics and optimize efficiency. Its body shape is markedly low and forward, which cuts drag during driving, while the merging of the side wall and roofline help to create a wedge-like shape and further decrease overall resistance.

High Tech Interior and Sustainable Materials
True to its sports car character, the interior is designed to be driver focused, angling the center console slightly to the left and placing driver-relevant functions like the gearshift level, Start/Stop button, and parking brake around the driver's seat. Pushing this driver-focused philosophy even further, the 3D, high-resolution display screen is positioned on the dashboard to convey information clearly and simply.
Scissor Doors
With scissor doors that glide upward when opened and blend perfectly when closed, the sporty character of the BMW i8 is immediately recognizable. Constructed from aluminum and carbon fiber reinforced plastic, the doors are 50% lighter than conventionally built counterparts. This lightness also makes them easy to open and close, with an ergonomically positioned handle on the inside door panel also acting as a refined decorative touch.

Navigation Professional System
The professional Navigation System for the BMW i3, with its BMW i ConnectedDrive Services, was specifically developed for making driving as easy and convenient as possible. Lithium-Ion High-Voltage Battery
The lithium-ion high-voltage battery is positioned in the center of the aluminum Drive Module of the BMW i3, and is optimally protected against outside influences. A specially developed heating and air conditioning system ensures as little temperature fluctuations as possible, which significantly increases its service life.
Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic
The passenger compartment of the BMW i3—the LifeDrive module—is completely made of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP), which is an especially light and high-strength material that provides outstanding protection to passengers in the event of an emergency. Until now, the manufacture and use of this material for large series production was too difficult, but after 10 years of intensive research and experience in the development of these parts, the BMW Group has found an innovative solution, which now produces carbon fiber and carbon fiber plates in a joint venture with the company SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers.
