Three Lockable Differentials
As you make your way off-road, three sequentially lockable differentials offer increasingly masterful capability. Each differential can be locked in sequence (center, rear, then front) via a set of buttons on the dash, to help maintain the ideal balance of torque and traction for the situation.
Attitude At Any Latitude
An advanced V8 biturbo engine generates 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque from a compact 4.0 liters of displacement. Able to thrust the G550 from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds, it features a "hot inside V" turbo layout, patented low-friction NANOSLIDE® cylinder walls, and an ECO Start/Stop system.
Permanent All-Wheel Drive
The standard G-Class permanent all-wheel drive system continually sends power to all four wheels. Its 4-wheel Electronic Traction System (4-ETS®) instantly apportions torque to the wheels that can use it best, for surefooted grip on snowy and wet roads. Off-road, its locking differentials help you conquer muddy, loose or uneven terrain.
ECO Start/Stop System
An ECO Start/Stop system automatically shuts off the engine at stoplights and other idle situations, to save fuel and reduce emissions. As soon as the driver lifts off the brake, the engine instantly restarts, for immediate acceleration response. The ECO Start/Stop system can also be shut off by the driver at any time.

Distance Pilot DISTRONIC
Radar-based cruise control can adapt your set speed in response to the flow of traffic ahead. If traffic slows, it can reduce your speed until your path clears. If the vehicle ahead slows to a stop, Distance Pilot DISTRONIC® can brake to a full halt. When traffic moves, you can resume with just a tap, or automatically if the stop is under a second.
Blind Spot Assist
At most driving speeds, radar technology helps sense when a vehicle enters the blind-spot area. An icon illuminates in the appropriate side mirror to alert the driver of a detected vehicle. The system also gives an audible warning if the driver activates a turn signal while a vehicle is detected.
Electronic Stability Program
This safety breakthrough first introduced by Mercedes-Benz continually monitors your driving inputs and the vehicle's motion to help keep it going in your intended direction, especially in corners and during evasive maneuvers.
